5 Signs Your Dryer Needs Repair — Calgary Homeowners Take Note

Your dryer is one of the hardest-working appliances in your home. Load after load, it pulls moisture out of your laundry so you're not hanging clothes around the house or waiting days for things to air dry. When it starts struggling, most people assume it's just "getting old" — but in most cases, a failing dryer has a specific, fixable cause.

Here are five warning signs Calgary homeowners tell us about most often, what's behind them, and what to do.

1. Clothes Are Taking Two or Three Cycles to Dry

This is the most common dryer complaint we hear — and it's almost never a sign that the dryer is simply worn out. A dryer that runs but leaves clothes damp after a full cycle is usually dealing with one of three problems: a clogged exhaust vent, a failing heating element, or a worn drum seal.

A clogged vent is the most frequent cause. Lint builds up in the exhaust duct over time, restricting airflow and trapping moisture inside the drum. Beyond making your dryer inefficient, a clogged vent is a fire hazard — lint is highly flammable, and a blocked duct can cause heat to build up to dangerous levels.

A failed heating element means the drum is tumbling but no heat is being generated. Your clothes come out cool and damp no matter how long the cycle runs.

A worn drum seal allows hot air to escape around the drum opening rather than circulating through the load. You'll often notice the outside of the dryer feeling unusually warm when this is the cause.

All three are repairable. Calgary's dryer repair service can diagnose the exact cause and fix it — usually in a single visit.

2. The Dryer Is Overheating

If your dryer is too hot to touch, your laundry comes out scorching, or the machine shuts itself off mid-cycle, you have an overheating problem — and it needs attention right away.

The most common cause is a blocked exhaust vent (see above). When hot, moist air can't escape, heat builds up inside the drum and the dryer's thermal fuse or thermostat trips to prevent a fire. If the thermal fuse blows, the dryer will stop heating entirely until it's replaced.

A faulty cycling thermostat can also cause overheating. The cycling thermostat regulates the temperature inside the drum during operation; when it fails, the heating element runs continuously without cycling off, driving temperatures well above normal.

Do not ignore an overheating dryer. It is a fire risk. Disconnect the appliance and call a technician before using it again.

3. The Dryer Is Making Loud or Unusual Noises

A healthy dryer runs with a consistent, low hum. If yours has started thumping, squealing, grinding, or rattling, something mechanical has worn or come loose.

Thumping or banging is usually a worn drum support roller or a flat spot on the drum itself. The drum sits on rollers at the back and front of the cabinet; when a roller wears down, the drum wobbles and thumps with every rotation.

Squealing or squeaking typically points to a worn drum belt or a dry idler pulley. The drum belt wraps around the drum and is driven by the motor; the idler pulley keeps tension on the belt. Both wear over time and produce a high-pitched squeal when they start to go.

Grinding is often a worn drum bearing or a foreign object — a coin, a button, a zipper pull — caught between the drum and the cabinet.

These are all mechanical repairs that a technician can handle quickly. Catching them early prevents a minor worn part from becoming a seized drum or a snapped belt that leaves you with a dryer that won't run at all.

4. The Drum Isn't Spinning

If you can hear the motor running but the drum isn't turning, the drive belt has almost certainly broken. The drive belt is a long, thin loop that wraps around the drum and connects to the motor via the idler pulley. It's a wear item — it will eventually snap, especially on older machines or machines that run heavy loads frequently.

Replacing a drive belt is a straightforward repair for a technician. The cabinet needs to be opened, the old belt removed, and a new one routed correctly around the drum, idler pulley, and motor pulley. Most technicians carry common belt sizes and can complete the repair in a single visit.

If the belt is intact but the drum still won't spin, the motor or the start capacitor may be the issue. A technician can test both components and advise you on the repair.

5. There's a Burning Smell Coming From the Dryer

A burning smell from a dryer is never something to dismiss. There are a few possible causes, ranging from minor to serious.

Lint buildup on the heating element is the most common cause of a burning smell. Lint that escapes the lint trap can accumulate on or near the heating element and scorch when the element heats up. This is a fire risk and should be addressed immediately.

A worn drum seal or felt strip can also produce a burning smell as the drum rubs against the cabinet. This is less dangerous but still a sign that the machine needs attention.

A failing motor can produce a burning electrical smell — distinct from the smell of scorching lint. If the smell is sharp and electrical rather than dusty, shut the dryer off and call a technician before running it again.

In any case: if your dryer smells like it's burning, stop using it until the cause has been identified. The same-day appliance repair team at Maple Leaf can get a technician to you quickly.

When to Repair vs. Replace Your Dryer

A dryer that's under 10 years old and showing one of the symptoms above is almost always worth repairing. The cost of a new dryer — plus delivery, installation, and disposal of the old unit — typically far exceeds the cost of a targeted repair.

Even dryers over 10 years old can be worth fixing if the repair is straightforward (a belt, a heating element, a thermostat) and the machine is otherwise in good condition. Our technicians will give you an honest, upfront assessment before any work begins. If repair doesn't make sense, we'll tell you.

No fix, no fee — if we can't repair your dryer, you don't pay. (Exception: if parts are no longer available for your model, we'll let you know before we start.)
